7 ways to help people who are homeless

which won't cost you a penny

Times are tough for us all right now, and donating to a charity may be way down your list of priorities. But if you want to help, there are things that you can do which will make a big difference without costing the earth. Here are 7 simple and free ways you can help somebody who has found themselves homeless.

1. VOLUNTEER

for a charity close to your heart. We don’t currently have any volunteering vacancies at CENS as we are lucky enough to have all our roles filled. However, we do occasionally have vacancies, so keep an eye out. Volunteering can be so rewarding – you can meet new people, learn new skills and really make a difference. It may only be for a few hours a week or even once a month – it all counts.

2. LEARN

about homelessness, What are the causes? Why is homelessness on the rise? What can you do to help? Campaign for change and educate others. The more people who want change, the easier it becomes.

3. DONATE

groceries, clothing or bedding. We don’t just need money here at CENS. Running a shelter is costly, but you can donate in other ways. Maybe you have some supermarket vouchers which we could spend on food and household items. Sometimes we need bedding or furniture. Or you could even donate some plants from your garden to help spruce up the garden. Maybe you have some spare produce from your vegetable patch. Check our socials and website as we regularly give shout-outs for things we need.

4. SUPPORT

local businesses who support us. If you scroll through our social media posts and news stories, you will see that many local businesses support us through donations, fundraising and by offering their services. By supporting them, you support us. You may run a business yourself and be able to offer us a service. We always love hearing from local businesses, so get in touch.

5. BE KIND

to people who are homeless in our community. It may be just a smile or a nod of acknowledgement. Maybe you might want to say hello and stop for a chat. Importantly, do not just ignore someone who has found themselves homeless – it really can happen to anyone so take the time to be kind.

6. FUNDRAISE

for a charity of your choice. It may take some of your time and effort, but you can very easily set up a fundraiser at little or no cost these days. Set a physical challenge or hold a table sale. Get together with others and host a movie night or an afternoon tea. We love it when we hear that one of our supporters is raising funds for us, so make sure to tell us, so we can spread the word and for some fundraising inspiration, head to our Fundraising Page here.

7. GIVE ADVICE

to others who want to help and to people who are homeless. There are many local charities and organisations offering help to those that have found themselves homeless. Make sure you know where they can get help, so that you can share this knowledge. If you are unsure, you can always send an alert to Streetlink who will contact the local services available to support them.
