We couldn’t run as effectively without our loyal team of volunteers. Here are five ways their help means residents are supported in the best way:
Ex resident returns
Andy comes in every week to help our kitchen co-ordinator Emma organise the kitchen and larder. Food shops, Fareshare deliveries and donations need sorting, so Andy’s organisation skills are well-received. It means a lot to him that he can come back to help CENS as he stayed here a few years ago but now has his own tenancy.
Green space
Having a garden is something a lot of us take for granted. But the therapeutic benefits are appreciated by all of our residents, thanks to our wonderful volunteer Karen. Karen comes by to water the fuscias every week and maintains our garden. Residents can enjoy the little oasis and relax after being out all day.
Food for thought
Simon comes in every Wednesday to cook up a hearty meal for everyone. This frees up time for the project worker on duty to focus on the residents. Often, they have something sensitive to discuss which needs special attention. Without Simon giving up his free time this wouldn’t be possible.
Puppy love
Emer and Helene from Essex Therapy Dogs come over once a month with their lovely dogs. This is always well-received by the residents who can’t bring pets with them when they refer into CENS. Everyone goes to bed happier by swapping stories about old pets and having a cuddle with the adorable dogs.
Online support
Emily, one of our trustees, is a media whizz and helps design, run and write for our website in her spare time. Without promoting the good work done at CENS people wouldn’t have heard of us and know how to get help. Thanks to her expertise our website is now one of the top ranking searches for homelessness in Colchester.
