Based At: Colchester CENS
Hours: 10 hours per week. Monday-Friday (hours to be agreed)
Pay: £10.50 per hour (£5,460 per annum)
As Kitchen Co-ordinator you are expected to efficiently run the CENS kitchen, stores and manage our volunteer cooks. This is to include purchasing of the food, planning menus, managing the stock and the stores to include rotation of stock and goods to minimalise waste. You will also be responsible for co-ordinating and organising all kitchen volunteer cover and liaising with the Administrator to ensure that relevant checks are carried out. You will be preparing the rotas for the volunteer cooks and setting the menus in accordance to cook’s skill set.
Additionally, you will deal with food donations and ensuring that they are utilised correctly. You will ensure all Health and Hygiene procedures in the kitchen, larder and stores are kept up-to-date, and further ensuring that all the necessary records are completed accurately and timely by you on a weekly basis. You will need to work quickly and calmly when under pressure. You will need to understand how to control a budget, prepare cost spreadsheets and collate receipts and vouchers for inspection by the Manager for the accounts.
You will become the main contact with some of our supermarket and other suppliers, negotiating our food supplies and ensuring gaps in supplies are covered. Along with this, you will be required to collect some supermarket donations; therefore a driver with access to a vehicle is preferred. All mileage expenses will be covered.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Your duties would include:
- responsibility for controlling the food budget and keeping accurate records
- managing health and hygiene procedures in the kitchen and stores
- weekly online food and supplies ordering
- taking delivery of orders and unpacking
- managing stocks of food including regular stock rotation
- planning and devising weekly menus to ensure inclusion of any donated fresh produce and also taking into consideration the volunteer’s skill set
- occasional preparation and cooking of the evening meal if we have a volunteer shortage
- ensure that food is stored correctly and labelled once opened
- clearing and cleaning the fridges and freezers on a weekly basis
- checking that the food temperatures and fridge/freezer temperatures have been recorded and completed by evening staff
- organising catering for CENS events both internally and externally
- attending meetings as required with external agencies
- collection of supermarket donations as and when (expenses reimbursed)
Training & Development
You may be required to undertake further training to meet the requirements of the role.
Ad-hoc duties
Undertake any other duties as directed by the Manager that contributes to the success of CENS
Qualifications
- Level 2 award in Food Safety & Hygiene
Aptitude & Skills
- Has previous experience of running a kitchen facility, and understands the importance of stock rotation
- Effective communication, including good interpersonal skills, a non-judgmental attitude, and listening skills
- Numeracy/literacy skills
- The ability to work cooperatively and flexibly with others
- The ability to work enthusiastically and creatively on own initiative
- Car driver with access to a vehicle
- Must have excellent organisational skills
- Competent use of Microsoft Office
- Good understanding of planning and budgeting
- Able to produce a good quality meal for 15+ people
- Have empathy and a compassionate nature and attitude
