Colchester's Homeless Shelter

More than just a shelter…

When people think about homelessness support, they often imagine emergency shelters or temporary beds. But we try to offer real opportunities to build positive futures.

Here are some lesser-known facts that highlight what sets Colchester Engagement and Next Steps in Colchester apart (if we do say so ourselves 😄).

Privacy and Dignity

A lot of people assume a homeless shelter means shared dormitories or limited privacy. But we feel people do better when they’re supported to live independently, taking ownership of the space we allocate to them. Every resident has access to their own ensuite room, providing a private space that they are supported to look after and keep clean and tidy. This gives residents control over their own space which is something they may not have had due to sofa surfing or rough sleeping.

The Power of a Drug and Alcohol‑Free Space

We are a drug- and alcohol-free environment, creating a stable, predictable setting where residents can focus on rebuilding their lives without the pressures or temptations of substance misuse. For many residents, it’s the first time they’ve lived somewhere where calm is the norm. Staff provide consistent encouragement, and the structured environment helps individuals break cycles.

A Next Step Next Door!

One of the aspects of our organisation that doesn’t get as much attention is our Move‑On accommodation, designed to bridge the gap between supported living and total independence. Move‑On accommodation offers a more independent living arrangement while still providing access to guidance and support when needed. Residents learn practical skills and can look for work while still being able to afford to live independently. They get the chance to budget, cook and manage appointments, which are crucial to sustaining long-term independence (plus the main shelter is next door so we can offer support when needed). This step is often the difference between short-term improvement and permanent change.

Moving People On is our Aim

Colchester Engagement and Next Steps Colchester is not designed for long-term stays. We exist to move people on into appropriate housing, and into healthier, more confident versions of themselves.

Our Strategy Focuses On:

Success is measured not by how many people stay, but by how many people leave ready for the future.

  • Building independence and adopting responsibility
  • Supporting personal development
  • Helping residents create achievable goals
  • Celebrating every step forward
