August at CENS – Lots Going On!

There’s always lots going on at Colchester Homeless Shelter CENS. Check out our monthly update. Read on for some great insights into life at the shelter!

Good News

Our good news story of the month goes to Paul, who became homeless and then shortly after was offered his dream job. Without an address it was looking like he would need to turn down the offer, until CENS stepped in with a solution. Read more here.

News From the Kitchen

Have you ever wondered what it’s like working in the kitchen of a homeless shelter? Check out Emma’s blog of a typical day here

Below are some of the amazing meals that she and her team of volunteers have cooked this month.

Residents Art

Emma’s not the only one being creative around here. Residents have been often found doing art of an evening, it’s a great way to unwind and a distraction from the stress of their situation, whether it’s mindfulness colouring or creating their own artwork.

What’s it Like to Run a Shelter?

Marina is our hard working and knowledgeable manager. She has been in post for nearly 10 years and before that was housing manager. This month she found time in her schedule to describe her typical day here.

Ships in the Night Finally Meet!

CENS staff can rarely meet together. Due to the nature of the project we are often only see each other in passing as day staff leave and night staff take over. This month we had a rare to chance to catch up together as we had a wonderful afternoon tea at Patry61. We said goodbye to one of our long term volunteers, the lovely Sera who went back to Korea after 6 months here. She will be missed!

Demand For Shelter Spaces still increasing

This month has seen the number of people asking for help increase yet again, with a record breaking 126 referrals into the shelter. With only 6 spaces becoming available over the whole month, that paints a picture of the demand on homeless services at the moment. Other agencies are seeing a huge increase too.

The pace of move-on has slowed too, with people staying at CENS longer while they search for somewhere to live.

Save the Date!

That’s it for this month, but look out for more news on our AGM being held on 20th October 12pm. We would love to see you there!
