Most of us want to help people who are struggling, but not everyone has extra money to spare. The good news? You don’t need money to make a big difference to the lives of people who have found themselves homeless. Sometimes, the most meaningful acts are totally free.
Here are 5 thoughtful and simple ways you can help homeless people that won’t break the bank:
- Acknowledge them as people – because they are! One of the simplest and often overlooked ways to help is by just looking them in the eye and saying hello. Smile. Ask how they are. Many homeless people say that the worst part of their situation is feeling invisible. A kind word can go a long way.
- Volunteer your time. Time is one of the most valuable things you can give. There are many local homeless charities who are often in need of an extra pair of hands. Maybe you have a specific skill or trade which you could offer for free, or perhaps you could help out with cooking or gardening. Here at CENS we have regular volunteers who give up their time to help our residents and you can find out more about volunteer opportunities here.
- Share information. We do our best to spread the news about the valuable services we offer, but many homeless people don’t have easy access to information about the help that is available locally. Sharing it can be a lifeline to those in need. Have CENS’s information to hand and be aware of Streetlink, so you can point people in the right direction. The GET HELP NOW section on our website is packed with useful information.
- Campaign and advocate. Talking to your friends, colleagues and family about homelessness and common misconceptions surrounding it, can really break down barriers and spark change. Sharing social media posts and speaking about the work we do here at CENS could help build more support. Maybe your workplace is looking for a local charity to support or perhaps a friend is planning a fundraiser – we are always happy to help and collaborate.
- Donate items you don’t need. We will always give a shout-out for items that we specifically need, as we don’t have any space for storage. However, other homeless charities are often looking for bedding, clothing and other essential items. Another idea is to hold a table-top or garage sale to raise money for CENS. Have a good old clearout of your unwanted books, toys, bric-a-brac and you’ll declutter your home, help the environment by rehoming your stuff and raise money to help homeless people.
