As we approach International Women’s Day, it’s crucial to shed light on the unique challenges faced by women without stable housing. It can often heighten vulnerability to violence, trauma and specific health needs.
Accurately determining the number of homeless women in the UK is almost impossible due to factors like underreporting and hidden homelessness. However, referrals from women to CENS has increased year on year with 1,028 in 2023 to 1,053 in 2024*.
Stop the stigma
Women who experience homelessness are more likely to have experienced stigma around their situation. CENS creates an environment that feels safe, supportive and empowering. We have private rooms to conduct support meetings, and all staff are trained to be sensitive to individual needs.

Trauma-informed support
It is paramount for CENS staff to know when female residents need specialised help and to make referrals to outside agencies. We have links with CARA and Next Chapter who are trauma-informed and can support alongside support workers at CENS.
Enhanced security measures
CENS has security features such as CCTV inside and outside the shelter. There are security locks on all entrances which are patrolled and checked every day. We also have well-lit communal areas. These measures are all to ensure female residents know that their safety is paramount.

Risk assessments on residents
When taking new referrals into CENS we carry out risk assessments and background checks where possible. We also reserve the right to deny referrals if they have a history of violent crimes.
