Homelessness is a reality that faces many communities across our country. It affects not only the individuals who experience it but also the neighbourhoods and towns surrounding them. As a society, we must take a compassionate approach to understand this issue, seeing it through the eyes of those who are affected directly and indirectly. Through kindness and compassion we can help lessen the trauma an individual faces when dealing with the devastating impact of becoming homeless.
In 2025, homelessness in England rose significantly, with one in 160 people experiencing homelessness. This is up from one in 182 in 2023, mainly due to a sharp rise in rough sleeping and families in temporary accommodation. The number of homeless households in temporary accommodation reached a record high, with 126,040 households, a 16% increase in a year. Children experiencing homelessness in temporary accommodation also reached a new record, with 164,040, a 15% increase in a year.

The Ripple Effect on Communities
The presence of homelessness in a community affects everyone, not just those living without homes. It can lead to increased tensions, safety concerns, and a sense of unease among those living in the area. However, it’s crucial to recognise that this issue presents an opportunity for community growth and compassion.
Community Safety and Perception: Many people may feel concerned about safety and cleanliness in areas where homelessness is prevalent. These feelings can lead to a divide, fostering misunderstanding and resentment. However, it is essential to remember that homeless individuals are often vulnerable and deserving of compassion, not judgment. Literally anyone can be affected by homelessness. Your loved ones, friends and work colleagues. Imagine how you would feel if someone was mean to them if they were on the streets and cold and alone.
Economic Impact: On a larger scale, homelessness can impact local economies. Businesses might feel the pinch if fewer customers are willing to visit areas where they perceive homelessness as a problem. Implementing supportive services and programs can enhance the overall health of the community, creating a more inviting environment for both residents and visitors. In poorer areas we sadly see an increase in homelessness due to lack of housing, jobs and community engagement. Many homeless people can huddle in groups to not feel so alone and find kinship and support from each other, but this can also lead to further disruptive behaviours and can continue a cycle of addiction and not reaching out for help leading to a lack of awareness to outreach services.
Helping the Homeless Community at CENS!
CENS has seen incredible support from the people of Colchester, showing it is a city that offers a hand, not a cold shoulder. Here are just a few examples from over the years:

What a lovely generous donation from Linklaters LLP who have previously supported us with a large cash donation of £6.5K this year! At Christmas Chris and Denise from Linklaters LLP amazed us with 200 wrapped presents and with their permission we shared these gifts with other homeless charities in the area.

We had a lovely donation from Elfreda House sheltered housing who kindly delivered all the treats left over from their VE Day celebrations. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the lovely treats!

JLA kindly donated brand new washing machines and tumble dryers for our residents to use in our night shelter. They make such a difference and it is so important for our residents to be able to do their own laundry!

Essex Therapy Dogs visit our night shelter once a month and spend time with the residents. Dog therapy has been proven to reduce stress and calm your anxiety. We love it when they come along!
Embracing a Compassionate Response: What You Can Do
Turn empathy into action with these three easy steps:
1. Educate Yourself and Others:
Understanding the complexities and causes of homelessness from job loss, domestic violence, mental health issues, lack of affordable housing and more can help combat stereotypes. Share your knowledge with friends and family to raise awareness and generate empathy.
2. Support Local Organisations:
Volunteer your time, donate clothing or money, food, or simply ask what is needed.
3. Be an Advocate:
Real change happens when you back policies that aim to address the root causes of homelessness – affordable housing, mental health services, and job training programs – It can help to create systemic change.
A Final Thought
Homelessness is a complex challenge that impacts not just individuals but the fabric of our communities as well.
Every person living without a home has a story, a past and hopes for a better future. By choosing compassion and action, we can build communities where no one is left behind.
