At CENS, we believe that offering a safe, welcoming environment is paramount. For this reason, we have a strict drug-free and alcohol-free policy. Here, we delve into the rationale behind this decision and its importance in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness.
Creating a Safe Haven
One of the primary reasons we implemented a drug and alcohol-free policy is to create a safe haven for the most vulnerable members of our community. Many individuals seeking shelter are fleeing from environments of chaos, addiction or violence. By offering a space free from substances, we strive to foster an atmosphere of serenity and peace, enabling guests to focus on their recovery, stability, and overall well-being.

Supporting Recovery
For many individuals’ experiencing homelessness, substance abuse can often be a contributing factor to their situation. Our policy values the importance of recovery by encouraging our guests to take regular drug and alcohol tests. If a resident fails a drugs test, then they will be excluded for a night. We also breath test our residents every single time they come into the building. If a resident blows over, they cannot be admitted until it shows a zero reading. By creating an alcohol and drug-free environment, we aim to reduce triggers that may encourage relapse or hinder progress towards recovery. We believe that sobriety is achievable when the surrounding environment supports these efforts. We also refer residents with substance misuse issues to Open Road in Colchester, a drug and alcohol recovery project.
Fostering Community and Respect
A drug-free and alcohol-free shelter promotes a culture of respect and responsibility. Residents can forge meaningful relationships based on mutual understanding and support rather than substance use. This sense of community is vital when individuals are working to rebuild their lives. By eliminating drugs and alcohol, we encourage constructive interactions and empower individuals to lean on one another for support without the distractions of substance use.

We have recently refurbished one of our rooms into “Lanswood Reflection Room” following an amazing donation from Lanswood – The Leading Property Development Company in Colchester. This new room provides a tranquil space for residents to relax, reflect and enjoy.
Encouraging Responsibility
Our mission extends beyond merely providing shelter. We believe in fostering a sense of responsibility among our guests. With a focus on sobriety, individuals can better manage the challenges they face, whether related to employment, mental health, or personal relationships. A healthy mindset is vital for making sound decisions that lead toward a more stable future.
Freedom From Addiction
Our night shelter’s drug-free and alcohol-free policy is not merely a set of guidelines; it is a commitment to providing the best possible support for individuals grappling with homelessness. By providing a safe, respectful, and recovery-oriented environment, we stand behind our mission to empower individuals toward a healthier, brighter future. We believe that with the right support, each person has the potential to overcome obstacles and reclaim their lives.
